Email Settings: SMTP relay through Google

Please note: The following information is provided as helpful guide based on Google’s documentation. We would appreciate feedback on any success/failure so that we can improve our documentation accordingly.

As alternative, the Google Workspace (Google Suite) instructions are already verified to work.

The following information will help you to set up relay through Google’s Workspace Relay service. Using the relay may help further eliminate sending limits as well as the possibility to enable other features supported in the relay settings.

Enable use of SMTP Relay through Google

Please refer to Google’s documentation on enabling this portion.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

  2. Enable the SMTP Relay under Apps > Google Workspace > Gmail > Routing. You can add, edit, and delete the SMTP relay service setting at the top-level organization only.

  3. Scroll to SMTP relay service and click Configure. If the setting is already configured, click Edit or Add another.

We suggest using the Require SMTP Authentication option. This should enable us to use a specific SMTP username / app password along with TLS security and specify those in the next step in the IoT Console. You should then set up an SMTP Username & App Password, such as shown here for use in the next step.

Configure IoT Console to use Google SMTP Relay

  1. Go to the Email settings in the IoT Console and be sure the setup is as follows:

    • SMTP Host: smtp-relay.gmail.com

    • SMTP Port: 587

    • SMTP Username: the Google Workspace email address whose password will be validated for sending mail through the relay.

    • SMTP Password: the SMTP password for the workspace email (use of Google’s 16 digit App Password feature is recommended)

    • SMTP Secure: No

    • SMTP Require TLS: Yes

  2. Be sure to click on Save.

We recommend sending yourself a Report or triggering an email Alert notification from one of our white label app accounts to verify things are working as expected.
